2017 Library Card! Let's "Build a Better World!"

Once again, I've been tasked with creating another fun-filled library card for the fine folks at the Union County Library (see past cards here)! This time, the simple theme given me was "build a better world," and, with that, off I went! Click each image below to enlarge!

Below five images: I submitted these pencilled rough designs, all hinged on the "build a better world" motif! The trick, as always, was to get the scene to be clear and powerful enough to "broadcast" from a tiny library card!

Below: The "puzzle-piece world" idea won out! Here are the final pencils, worked up from the rough sketch!

Below: The final inked drawing....

Below: The final colors, with text and graphic elements added!

Below: The artwork used for the actual library card and key-fob!

2016 Superhero Library Card! Exercise Your Mind!

Back again with yet another superhero-themed library card (see past card designs here)! The same North Carolina library system tasked me with creating this year's captivating card, and here it is! Click below to see its creation, in a sensational step-by-step process!

Below three images: Some rough ideas I submitted, retaining
the idea of superhero action, mixed with reading and learning!

Below two images: The above "running profile" pencil
sketch was chosen, and I began work fleshing out the
two main superhero stars! It was decided to make the
female fighter the main star, so, into the spotlight she goes!

Below: Characters are put in place, but the pencil
sketch still needs some fine-tuning!

Below: The final pencil sketch!

Below: The final inked piece, ready for colors!

Below: The fully-rendered card, complete with
colors and text in place!

Below: The finished lending card (with key-chain fob-tag)!
I'll see ya at the library!

The NEW Superhero Library Card! 2015 Edition!

That's right! I was asked back by a local library, to create another new (see the first one here) superhero-themed library card! Once again, the card was to feature two cavorting costumed characters, in dramatic action, all in an awesome effort to promote reading, and the attractions of the library system! Click below to follow the card's step-by-step creation! Click each image to enlarge!

Below ten images: Rough pencil ideas for the card! Once again, the
theme was to feature two heroes (one male, one female), and
the many library offerings!

Below two images: Zeroing in on the final image! It was decided
to feature the two superheroes exploding from the interior of
an opened hardback book, so...

Below: The final penciled art for the card! Note the changes
to the two characters, so as to differentiate them from the
previous heroes that were seen on the first card!

Below: The final inked art for the finished card!

The Coming of the Sensational Superhero Library Card!

In 2014, I was asked to supply ideas and art for a great local library, in an effort to produce an eye-catching superhero-themed library card! See the images below, and follow along on the step-by-step creation of this memorable piece of art! The card even won an award from the North Carolina Public Library Director's Association, in the "outstanding promotional program" category! Click images to enlarge!

Below seven images: Ya gotta start somewhere! Rough ideas for the card, featuring
a literature-loving superhero, in all sorts of inky action!

Below: While hashing out a direction for the card, it was decided
a fabulous female heroine was to be added, hence, the below design!

Below: One idea was for a "flip card" format, with both
heroes spotlighting books and electronic equipment…

Below: Final pencils for a design that shows both happy heroes, demonstrating their strengths, as well as showing off so many items the library offers patrons, such as books, e-readers, CDs, DVDs, electronic equipment, etc

Below: It was decided the previous graphic was just too busy for a tiny
card (whose final dimensions would be a tad over a minuscule 3 by 2 inches!)…
So, back to the drawing board for this simple image, one that still shows off the
heroes and the library materials...

Below: Tighter pencils for the approved design...

Below: At last! Final finished pencils for the card!

Below: The finished inked image!

Below: The finished color art, complete with text!

Below: It's me, holding the finished card! Now, time to check out a ton of books!
